Windows Server 2008 dcpromo UI
Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 08:50PM In the "Small but slick UI change" category: if you create a new forest with an FFL of Windows Server 2008, the UI automatically flashes past the DFL selection screen since at that point the DFL could only be 2008. (Or...did 2003 do that as well when creating a new forest? Damn, now I need to spin up a virtual to confirm. Either way it's a nice little bit of logic to save someone a mouse-click.)
Meanwhile, in the "How the fracking frack did this get past UAT?" category: just for laughs, try running dcpromo /forceremoval against a DC that holds all 5 FSMOs (in this case the first DC created in the forest root domain). You will be faced with the following "Are you sure?" pop-ups in rapid succession:
- This DC is the RID Master, are you sure you want to force removal? (Yes.)
- This DC is the PDC Emulator, are you sure you want to force removal? (Yes.)
- This DC is the Infrastructure master, are you sure you want to...? (Yes!)
- This DC is the Domain Naming Master, are you sure you...? (For fisk's sake, Yes!)
- This DC is the Schema Master, are you sure you...? (Yes!!!!)
- This DC is a DNS server, are you sure...? (Shut up shut up shut up! Yes.)
- This DC is a GC, are you...? (*gouges out own eyes with a spoon* Yes.)
Granted, this is a corner case that would only really happen in a test lab, but...7 consecutive pop-ups? In what universe is that a good idea?
