iTunes marketing genius
Monday, May 26, 2008 at 09:15AM There's this "Just for You" feature on the iTunes store-front that I just noticed. Nothing new in concept, it's just like any other recommendations-based-on-previous-purchases model. Don't know if it's actually new or if I've only just noticed it, but no matter.
The genius is two-fold: price-point, and immediate gratification. I.e., if I just bought the new Dean Koontz off of Amazon and I get suggestions for a bunch of other books at a ~$10 price point? I may buy one and wait for it to be shipped to my house, I may not.
But if I buy New Order's "True Faith" off of iTunes because I heard it on the radio and remembered what an awesome song it was? I'm presented with a list of equally awesome songs that I'd totally forgotten that I liked...for $0.99 each and I can listen to them right now. Next thing you know, I've probably spent the same as I would have on that $10 Amazon book...because $0.99 a pop is an easy impulse spend.
(Oh yeah, that reminds me: gotta go get "NO SLEEP TIL....BROOKLYN!")
