An interesting linguistic exercise…

So I’m in Berlin for TEC, and happen to see while flipping through the hotel cable…

…that one of the in-room movies is The Dark Knight, overdubbed in German.

Now, I studied German in high school and college, to the extent that I can still at least understand most of what’s being spoken around me, if not quickly formulate sentences in response.

The voices are obviously completely wrong, as even if Christian Bale spoke German, the German distributors wouldn’t have been able to afford to pay him to re-record. (Let alone the whole Heath Ledger being dead problem.)

Anyway, I found it fascinating to watch a scene in which I’m accustomed to hearing the Joker say, in Heath’s incomparable delivery: “Aaaaaand…here…we….go!”, and instead hearing “Und jetzt…geht’s…los!”

Yeah, I’m just a language geek, I know. I still thought it was cool.
